A two-act musical revue, Songs for a New World pulls together 16 songs written by a young Jason Robert Brown. Each centers on the same theme: the moment of decision before a great personal transformation. Genres range from “country-ish” to pop to gospel, with characters just as varied: anxious explorers, a wonder-filled pregnant woman, a frustrated Mrs. Claus, a Revolutionary War flagmaker and many more. Said Brown: “It’s about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back.”

Directed by Michael Mensching. Music direction by Maria Elmer.

Kick off the holidays with our Holiday Merchant Market (in partnership with Sand Lake Merchant). Shop from 60 vendors offering gifts including apothecary products, apparel, artwork, candles, decor, pet items, pottery, woven goods and more!

In addition to shopping, both SLCA and Sand Lake Merchant will host live music. Kids activities will include face painting, balloon artistry and other crafts.

Food and refreshments will be available at several locations. Gipfel Coffee will have bagels, homemade pastries, coffees and teas. Food trucks will be onsite serving a variety of comfort foods. Champagne, beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages will be available at Sand Lake Merchant’s second-floor event space. Towne Tavern across the street will also welcome hungry shoppers in their restaurant and bar.

Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at SLCA and Sand Lake Merchant

Take part in our 2024 Community Art Project!

Artists are asked to take the “canvas” provided by SLCA and create an original piece of art. The collection will be displayed all November long as part of a silent auction benefiting SLCA.

Interested artists are encouraged to call SLCA at 518-674-2007 or email slca.general@slca-ctp.org to arrange pickup of the canvas.

Maria Zemantauski is a nylon-string guitarist and composer whose style is influenced by a variety of musical genres, most notably Spanish classical, flamenco and American fingerstyle. Her programs are a dynamic blend of artistic freedom, innovation and tradition.

As one reviewer wrote, “Zemantauski has continually pushed the boundaries of the possible with her trusty six-string, blending genres that have little or no business appearing on the same bill, much less in the same song. It’s rarely less than electrifying to watch her do it.”

Maria will be joined by guitarist/mandolinist Sten Isachsen and percussionist Brian Melick.

Join local poet and teacher Nancy Klepsch for a community poetry workshop!

Participants will draft poems as exercises after instruction from the workshop provider, then share their work with one another. Students will learn to use poetry to make sense of their world and the issues that impact them. Learn how to use prompts and your life experiences to craft poetry in a meaningful way!

Nancy's public art projects include "Words in Transit" and "Best Wishes," both hosted at Albany International Airport. She co-hosts Second Sunday @ 2, a poetry/prose open mic in Troy, and co-founded Riverside Community Press. Her work has appeared in Fence, The Altar Collective, Sinister Wisdom, Oberon, 13th Moon and Chronogram, and online at Barzakh and Albany Poets.

Local favorite and friend of SLCA returns for another solo show!

Folk singer, songwriter and artist Kevin McKrell was a founding member of Celtic folk band Donnybrook Fair and the internationally renowned Celtic bluegrass band The McKrells. Kevin and his bands have performed for audiences at the top Celtic, folk and bluegrass festivals as well as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Troy Music Hall and more.

Crime author David Bushman will give a talk at SLCA to commemorate the unveiling of the Hazel Drew historical marker on Taborton Road and Mosher Road. The talk is cosponsored by the Sand Lake Historical Society, which will unveil a historical marker (thanks to a grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation) near the site where Hazel Drew’s body was discovered in 1908.

Bushman is the author of five nonfiction books, including Murder at Teal’s Pond: Hazel Drew and the Mystery That Inspired Twin Peaks. He spent two decades as a television curator at the Paley Center for Media and has over a decade of experience as a writer and editor for Gannett Newspapers, Variety and Billboard. Bushman is an adjunct professor of communications and writing and a former program director at the cable channel TV Land.

Calling all ghosts and ghouls—SLCA is back at it again! Bring the kiddos by Sand Lake Center for the Arts for a safe trick-or-treating experience!

SLCA is looking for community members to help out with this safe and exciting event. Volunteers are asked to decorate either the trunk spaces of their cars or a small space inside the center’s theater and hand candy out to area youth.
